Like a nail gun, a brad nailer drives small nails with pneumatic or battery power. Brad nailers are used with brad nails (usually referred to as brads). Brads are available in 14 gauge (2.2mm), 15 gauge (1.85mm), 16 gauge (1.6mm) & 18 gauge (1.25mm), varying in length from 10mm up to 64mm depending on the gauge. 

The small brad nailers fire 18 gauge brads, they are light-duty tools, perfect for delicate finishing touches and popular with crafters and model makers. The larger brad nailers are considered a finish nailer, great for joinery, furniture making and skirting & scotia in house construction.

Brads and brad nailers are suitable for plywoods, particle boards like MDF and hardwoods because they are strong enough to drive through these dense materials. They can also be used with softer wood types. The small head size makes them ideal for toy manufacture and furniture assembly.
